About

Teeth Removal

Teeth removal, also known as tooth extraction, is a dental procedure where a tooth is taken out from its socket in the jawbone. This may be done for several reasons, including severe decay, gum disease, infection, crowding, or damage that cannot be repaired. Extractions can be simple—done with local anesthesia and tools to loosen and remove the tooth—or surgical, which may involve cutting into the gum and sometimes removing bone to extract the tooth.

Why might I need

Teeth Removal

?

You may need a tooth removed if it is badly decayed or damaged beyond repair, if it’s infected and can’t be saved with a root canal, or if gum disease has caused it to become loose. Sometimes teeth are also removed to make space for orthodontic treatment, or if they are impacted, like wisdom teeth that haven’t come through properly. In some cases, a tooth may be fractured below the gum or in a way that makes it impossible to restore.

Different approaches to

Teeth Removal

The choice of method depends on the condition and position of the tooth, as well as the comfort for the patient:

Referral

If a case appears complex, if you prefer general anaesthesia, or if you're on certain medications that affect healing or bleeding, we can refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for specialised care.

Surgical extraction

A surgical extraction is more complex and is needed when the tooth is broken, impacted, or not fully erupted. Under local anaesthetic, this approach may involve making a small incision in the gum, and sometimes removing bone or sectioning the tooth into pieces to take it out safely.

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction is used when the tooth is visible in the mouth and can be removed easily with dental instruments under local anaesthetic. This involves gently loosening the tooth and lifting it out of the socket.

What is involved for

Teeth Removal

The process of tooth removal typically begins with a thorough examination, including X-rays, to assess the tooth’s position, root structure, and surrounding bone. This is followed by:

1

Local anaesthetic

The area is then numbed with a local anaesthetic to ensure you're comfortable during the procedure.

2

For simple extractions

For a simple extraction, the dentist uses special instruments to gently loosen and remove the tooth from its socket.

3

For an impacted or broken tooth

If the tooth is impacted or broken, a surgical extraction may be needed, which involves making a small cut in the gum and possibly removing bone or sectioning the tooth.

4

After removal

After the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned, and gauze is placed to help control bleeding and support blood clot formation.

5

Instructions

The dentist will then provide aftercare instructions to support healing and prevent complications.

How could

Teeth Removal

help me?

Tooth removal can help you by relieving pain caused by severe decay, infection, or damage that can’t be treated with other methods. It can also prevent the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and tissues, reduce overcrowding to improve alignment, and create space for orthodontic treatment if needed. In cases of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth, removal can prevent future discomfort and complications. Overall, removing a problematic tooth can improve your oral health and quality of life.
