About

Digital Smile Designs

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a digital technology-based approach in dentistry that uses imaging and software to analyse facial and dental proportions, enabling dentists and patients to co-design a customised smile makeover before any treatment is performed. It provides a precise and predictable process for achieving personalised and satisfactory smile transformations.

Why might I need

Digital Smile Designs

?

Digital Smile Design (DSD) can be beneficial for several reasons. It allows you to visualise and actively participate in the design of your smile makeover, ensuring that the final result meets your aesthetic goals and expectations. DSD also helps dentists to plan treatments with greater precision, resulting in more predictable outcomes.

Different approaches to

Digital Smile Designs

There are different approaches to Digital Smile Design (DSD) that can vary depending on the dentist and their specific workflow.

It's important to note that specific approaches may vary among dentists, but the underlying principle of using digital technology for smile analysis, design, and communication remains consistent in DSD.

Digital 3D with physical mockup

Once a digital three dimensional design is created, you may want to have the digital design temporarily transferred into your mouth to better assess the aesthetics and fit. This is sometimes the best way to visualise the final result before you commit to treatment.

3D Digital Design

In a digital three dimensional smile design, intraoral scans of your teeth are also used to create a precise simulation of how each tooth will be shaped in final treatment. This generally is performed in conjunction with our dental ceramists to ensure each tooth can be shaped and contoured for the best aesthetic and functional results. This design generally takes a few days to be generated.

2D Digital Design

In a digital two dimensional smile design, photos of your smile are used to simulate a desired outcome of treatment. This can be designed rapidly and helps you and your dentist to develop your ideal smile within a few minutes.

What is involved for

Digital Smile Designs

The process of Digital Smile Design (DSD) involves several steps:

1

Digital Records

Using specialised software, digital images, intraoral scanning and photographs of your face and smile are analysed, allowing for virtual smile design and treatment planning.

2

Collaboration and Communication

DSD involves close collaboration between you and your dentist. Through clear communication, the your desires and expectations are considered and incorporated into the final smile design.

3

Digital Mock-Up and Visualisation

Digital mock-ups are created to show you a preview of the proposed smile design. This allows you to visualise the potential outcome and provide feedback before any actual treatment is performed.

4

Treatment Execution

Once the smile design is approved, the actual treatment is performed, which may involve various cosmetic procedures such as veneers, dental bonding, orthodontics, or other treatments based on your needs and goals.
