About

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the process of removing external stains which can discolour your teeth over time. Professional teeth whitening products generally contain a peroxide-based active ingredients which is applied directly to your teeth. The peroxide molecules can remove stains from both the external enamel surface, as well as penetrate into the inner dentine surfaces of the teeth. The result is removal of stains from your teeth - both inside and out! While you may not end up with a ‘Hollywood’ white smile, most people will see a significant difference in colour.

Why might I need

Teeth Whitening

?

Our teeth are subjected to many staining foods, drinks and activities throughout our lives. These include dark foods and drinks such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, tomato sauce, beetroots, soy sauce and red wine - just to name a few. Activities such as smoking and medication use can also discolour teeth. Unfortunately, things beyond out control such as teeth grinding or ageing will also lead to teeth discolouring over time. While having discoloured teeth is not hazardous to the health of your teeth, some people may find that this may negatively affect their confidence or self esteem.

Different approaches to

Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening is generally separated into an ‘in-chair’ or ‘at-home’ approach. There are also other less effective ‘over-the counter’ products that are marketed to whiten teeth. We recommend that you have a consultation with a dentist to discuss which is more appropriate for your individual situation.

Lifestyle Changes

Making adjustments to lifestyle habits, such as reducing consumption of stain-causing foods and beverages, quitting smoking, and maintaining good oral hygiene practices, can help prevent further yellowing and maintain the results of teeth whitening treatments.

Charcoal toothpastes

These toothpastes act as abrasives and only remove some stains, but do not change the underlying colour of teeth. We do not recommend the use of these toothpastes as they can cause damage to your teeth over time.

Over-the-counter whitening strips/gels/pens

These products use a very low strength whitening chemical which is used in professional whitening products. These will help to whiten teeth but will take a long time and may potentially be less effective.

Whitening toothpastes

These toothpastes either work with a low strength whitening chemical (similar to professional products) and work over a very long period, or are very abrasive and can potentially cause damage to your teeth. We recommend you speak to your dentist about the specific product before using it.

Professional take-home bleaching trays

This approach uses a gentler, lower concentration gel in a custom whitening tray which you can use at home over a fortnight. The results are just as effective as the in-office method, but with lesser sensitivity.

Professional in-office (or Zoom) whitening

This ‘in-chair’ approach uses a very high concentration gel over 3 to 4 applications of 15 minutes each. The results are very good, but can cause significant sensitivity or struggle with certain stubborn stains.

What is involved for

Teeth Whitening

For ‘in-chair’ teeth whitening, we apply special barriers to your cheeks, gums and lips to prevent the teeth whitening gels from damaging them. High-strength teeth whitening gels are then carefully applied to your teeth for 15 minutes over 3 to 4 cycles in a single session.

However, we generally recommend professional take-home whitening for most patients as the best combination of results, maintenance, minimal discomfort and value for money.

1

Pre-whitening consultation

Your dentist will assess your teeth for suitability for teeth whitening to minimise potential complications and advise you if you should achieve good results.

2

Models

For ‘take-home’ teeth whitening to be safe and effective, we need to create custom whitening trays. We take 3D digital video scans of your teeth to create 3D printed models.

3

Create your whitening trays:

Your custom whitening trays are made for your upper and lower teeth. These are particularly important to ensure that the whitening gels are kept away from your gums as they can cause short term damage if applied incorrectly.

4

Fitting your whitening trays

We then ensure that these custom whitening trays fit your teeth perfectly for best safety and effectiveness. We provide you with whitening gels for use at home, as well as show you how to apply the gels and trays to your teeth.

5

Whiten your teeth

We generally recommend 10 to 14 days of whitening at home to achieve best results. Once you have finished the treatment, you can always reapply the gels after a few months if staining returns or the colour relapses.

6

Purchase more whitening gel

While the initial gel usually lasts for around 30 applications, we can supply refills to use with your custom trays. Your custom trays will last many years  as long as your teeth do not change significantly in that time.

How could

Teeth Whitening

help me?

Teeth whitening will help to improve the colour of your teeth back to their original colour, or even up to their natural limits. This is generally the least invasive method for improving the colour of your teeth as it generally does not require any removal of tooth material, and is simple to maintain over time. This may be purely cosmetic for some, but it can have a significant impact on confidence and self esteem for many people.
