About

Sport Mouthguards

A mouthguard is a protective device worn over the teeth to help prevent injuries to the mouth, teeth, and jaw during sports activities. It provides a cushioning barrier and helps absorb impact, reducing the risk of dental trauma or damage.

Why might I need

Sport Mouthguards

?

A sports mouthguard is essential for protecting your teeth, gums, jaw, and even the brain from potential injuries during sports activities. It acts as a cushion, absorbing and distributing the impact of a blow to the face, reducing the risk of tooth fractures, tooth loss, jaw fractures, and other oral injuries. Wearing a sports mouthguard can help prevent costly dental treatments, pain, and long-term oral health issues resulting from sports-related accidents or collisions.

Different approaches to

Sport Mouthguards

There are several approaches for provision of sports mouthguards that your dentist will discuss with you:

Over-the-counter

Over-the-counter, also known as ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards, can be purchased at pharmacies. They are very affordable and can be remoulded when teeth are moving (such as when baby teeth are being lost, or during orthodontic treatment). They do not offer a high level of protection as custom-made guards, and tend to be less comfortable to wear as they have a less precise fit.

Custom Mouthguards

Custom mouthguards are the best form of protection for your teeth and jaws during sports activities. Custom mouthguards are made of one or more layers of EVA vinyl material to ensure a precise and comfortable fit around your teeth and jaws, as well as providing a cushion to absorb and distribute any forces in an impact to the face.

What is involved for

Sport Mouthguards

The steps involved in making a mouthguard at Dentists of Hawthorn:

1

Consult and records

Your dentist will consult with you to discuss the activities that you require a mouthguard for as your sports mouthguard will be designed around the possible impact that can occur. Your dentist will then take records (either scans or impressions) of your teeth and jaws to allow your custom mouthguard to be fabricated. Most importantly, you will get to decide on the colour of the custom mouthguard that is made for you!

2

Mouthguard fitting and adjustment

Once your mouthguard is ready for fitting, your dentist will ensure the mouthguard provides excellent protection, as well as potential adjustments that there are no pressure areas or breathing issues.

3

Care instructions

Your dentist will discuss cleaning and storage of your mouthguard to keep it as clean as possible, as well as ensuring it can continue to protect your teeth as long as possible. If your teeth change significantly (due to dental work or lost teeth), you may require an updated mouthguard to ensure proper fit, comfort and protection.
