About

Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is sometimes necessary when a routine cleaning appointment just won’t do the job. This procedure is performed by your dentist, or they may recommend you see a gum specialist (known as a periodontist) in difficult or complicated situations. Ensuring your teeth are thoroughly cleaned is important to ensure your teeth remain stable, strong and healthy for as long as possible.

Why might I need

Deep Cleaning

?

Deep cleaning is usually required when there are stubborn bacterial deposits (known as calculus) along the roots of your teeth, deep underneath your gumline. This is generally present in patients with long term gum disease. This is commonly due to poor teeth cleaning at home, irregular professional cleaning appointments with your dentist, or having difficult to clean areas of your teeth due to the shape of your teeth or fillings. Cleaning these bacterial deposits from your teeth helps prevent gum disease, which if untreated can lead to premature tooth loss over time.

Different approaches to

Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning can be performed in different ways depending on the severity of bacterial deposits, as well as the difficulty in cleaning these areas.

Surgical approach

Surgical deep approach is generally reserved for more complicated cases of periodontitis where a non-surgical method has been attempted and has been unsuccessful in removing bacteria deposits. In this approach, the gum is temporarily lifted away from the teeth for the dentist or specialist to allow direct access to the roots of the teeth. This allows for a more thorough cleaning, but requires the gums to be sutured back into place and generally involves greater discomfort following the procedure.

Non-surgical approach

Non-surgical approach is the usual method of treating periodontitis. In this approach, the bacteria deposits are removed under local anaesthetic with special instruments which are inserted below the gumline by your dentist or specialist periodontist. The bacterial deposits are generally removed by a combination of instruments.

What is involved for

Deep Cleaning

Here are the process of what we do at Dentists of Hawthorn

1

Periodontal assessment

Your dentist or specialist periodontist will initially assess all teeth to review the current health of the gums, presence of gum disease and bacterial deposits, and stability of your teeth. Your dentist or periodontist will then discuss the procedures and number of visits required for all your teeth to be sufficiently cleaned.

2

Local anaesthetic

Deep cleaning is generally performed under local anaesthetic to ensure you are kept as comfortable as possible while the teeth are cleaned. We generally use a combination of topical anaesthetic creams, as well as injectable local anaesthetics to ensure you are pain-free throughout the procedure.

3

Deep cleaning of affected teeth

Based on the initial periodontal assessment, any teeth requiring treatment are then cleaned thoroughly with a combination of ultrasonic and hand instruments. This is generally performed over multiple visits, with sections of your mouth (such as a quarter or half of your mouth) cleaned at each visit as each appointment can be quite tiring.

4

Hygiene instructions

As well as performing your deep cleaning, your dentist or periodontist will also ensure that you can maintain excellent oral hygiene at home. This includes instructions on brushing, flossing and use of other specialty implements such as interproximal brushes, floss threaders and water flossers. Making sure that you can thoroughly clean your teeth at home ensures that your gums have the best chance of healing and staying as healthy as possible.

5

Maintenance

After all required teeth have been deep cleaned, you will generally be required to return for a review of your gums after 3 months. The gums are checked and compared to the measurements taken before your initial deep cleaning. This gives your dentist and periodontist an indication of how well your gums are healing, as well as highlighting any areas which may require further treatment.

How could

Deep Cleaning

help me?

Deep cleaning is critical in situations where you have deep and stubborn bacterial deposits which are causing gum disease and loss of bone supporting tooth stability. It will give you the best chance of keeping your teeth as long as possible, as well as helping your body improve the stability of any loose teeth. It also helps to eliminating bleeding, pus, foul tastes and smells from the bacteria stuck underneath your gums.
