Different approaches to
Deep Cleaning
Deep cleaning can be performed in different ways depending on the severity of bacterial deposits, as well as the difficulty in cleaning these areas.
Surgical approach
Surgical deep approach is generally reserved for more complicated cases of periodontitis where a non-surgical method has been attempted and has been unsuccessful in removing bacteria deposits. In this approach, the gum is temporarily lifted away from the teeth for the dentist or specialist to allow direct access to the roots of the teeth. This allows for a more thorough cleaning, but requires the gums to be sutured back into place and generally involves greater discomfort following the procedure.
Non-surgical approach
Non-surgical approach is the usual method of treating periodontitis. In this approach, the bacteria deposits are removed under local anaesthetic with special instruments which are inserted below the gumline by your dentist or specialist periodontist. The bacterial deposits are generally removed by a combination of instruments.
