About

Children's Dentistry

Children’s teeth and mouths are important for their overall health and can impact their long term health and wellbeing. It is important that your child can grow with healthy teeth and a positive view of dental care to set them up for a life long smile!

Why might I need

Children's Dentistry

?

Children’s dentistry is important to ensure that their baby and adult teeth and jaws grow appropriately and develop to be as strong as possible. There are many factors which can lead to preventable dental problems which your dentist can often catch early before they become larger, irreversible issues. These include advice on cleaning children’s teeth, helping them to brush their teeth effectively, reviewing the effects of children’s diets and medications on teeth, assessing children’s jaw growth, along with many other issues!

Different approaches to

Children's Dentistry

Children’s dentistry begins when their teeth first develop. Bringing infants or toddlers to the dentist can sometimes seem pointless, but even short visits help your children to acclimatise to the dental clinic environment and make it less scary when it comes for their first time in the dental chair.

Specialist paediatric dentists

When children have more extensive dental problems, we often recommend that they see a specialist paediatric dentist during their early childhood to have their necessary treatment performed.

We can organise a referral to a specialist paediatric dentist who can help to manage their care in their dental surgery, or potentially in hospital if more involved treatment is required.

Routine dental care with your family general dentist

Having a friendly family dentist who can offer ongoing dental care for your child helps to ensure their teeth develop correctly, as well as ensuring a positive attitude towards maintaining the health of their teeth through proper dental hygiene and dietary advice.

What is involved for

Children's Dentistry

Children’s first dental visits should always be a positive one to prevent the possibility of creating dental fears or phobias.

1

Preparing for a first dental visit

Before the appointment, reading books or watching videos designed for children can help them to understand what to expect at the dentist. Any discussions should be positive, rather than creating the image that the dental clinic is a scary place

2

Booking their visit

We generally recommend that children’s first dental visits are at the same time as their parents or carers to allow them to explore the room and observe what happens in the dental clinic environment

3

Assessment

Once your child has a chance to familiarise themselves with the surroundings, we initially review their teeth, mouths and jaws in the dental chair or on their parent’s lap to review their dental development

4

Education

We find teaching your child how to look after their teeth, and helping them to keep them clean helps to create a positive attitude towards keeping their teeth healthy. We often use special tooth paints to see where the germs on their teeth like to hide and show them how to brush their teeth to chase them all away! We can also assess individual circumstances such as diet, habits and dexterity to advise you how to give your child’s teeth the best to develop correctly and stay healthy!

How could

Children's Dentistry

help me?

Children’s dentistry helps by reducing the amount and complexity of treatment as their teeth and mouths develop.

Many dental problems can be often avoided if they are discovered early - this is particularly critical in children as their dental problems often develop faster than in adults. Regular visits to the dentist help to keep your children’s teeth strong as well as keeping them smiling!
