Why might I need

Check-Ups and Cleans

?

Regular checkups & cleans allow your dentist and team to review and monitor the condition of your teeth, mouth and jaws over time. This allows you to avoid more serious conditions from developing, either through preventative treatments (such as home hygiene advice, professional dental cleans or fissure sealants) or by finding and treating existing problems before they get worse.

Different approaches to

Check-Ups and Cleans

There are many reasons to make sure you have your regular checkups and cleans which help you avoid potentially serious issues from developing:

During pregnancy

Pregnancy can lead to several short term conditions which may cause more permanent damage to your teeth. Having your regular checkup and clean during pregnancy allows your dentist to review the potential problems that your teeth may encounter, as well as give you helpful advice on how to avoid longer term damage to your smile.

Before prolonged travel or deployment

Dental problems are never a good thing, but are even worse when you’re away from home! We recommend you have a regular checkup and clean before you leave for a long trip to prevent the need to ruin your time away with an emergency dental appointment. We can also issue letters to certify your dental health if you require one.

Before starting osteoporosis treatment

Certain medications for treatment of osteoporosis can lead to complications for dental treatment. We recommend that you have a regular checkup and clean and advise your dentist of medications you are going to commence so we can advise you on potential issues relevant to your situation.

Before orthodontic treatment

Having a regular checkup and clean before starting any orthodontic treatment is important as many common problems (such as cavities and gum disease) can worsen significantly during orthodontic treatment. Ensuring these problems are addressed before starting orthodontic treatment will ensure your teeth look as good and healthy as possible in the end!

Preventative maintenance

The best way to treat a problem is by ensuring it doesn’t show up in the first place! Having your regular checkup and cleaning with your dentist allows you to catch problems early and receive advice and treatment to prevent them from progressing further.

What is involved for

Check-Ups and Cleans

Regular checkups and cleans allow your dentist to review the health of your teeth and mouth, update you on their condition, as well cleaning them thoroughly.

1

Review your medical conditions

Your general health can have effects on the health of your teeth and mouth. Any changes to your medical status should be updated by your dentist so they can give you accurate advice on how to keep your teeth healthy.

2

Comprehensive dental assessment

Your dentist will examine your teeth, existing dental treatment, gum health, jaw joints and muscles so you are aware of any potential issues involving your mouth. These records are stored digitally so your dentist can track any changes occurring over time.

3

Cleaning

Your dentist will clean your teeth thoroughly - including removal of stains, plaque and hard bacterial deposits (calculus) both above and below the gums. This is performed with special ultrasonic instruments (which destroy bacteria and remove harder deposits) as well as polishing pastes or powders to remove stubborn stains.

4

X-rays

If X-rays of your teeth are required, your dentist can take these at your regular checkup and clean appointment. Screening X-rays allows you to review the health of your teeth and gums, and reduce the chance for cavities or gum problems from progressing to more serious issues. If specific teeth need further assessment, x-rays will allow your dentist to correctly diagnose any problems and help you to manage them appropriately.

5

Photos

Comprehensive photo records of your teeth allow your dentist to show you any problems that may be present, as well as allowing them to compare the current health of your teeth to a previous time.

6

Advice

Your dentist will advise you on the condition of your teeth and mouth, as well as discuss the need for future treatment or maintenance. Any options available will be discussed to help you decide on the correct treatment for you.

How could

Check-Ups and Cleans

help me?

Regular checkups help you by maintaining the health of your teeth as long as possible, as well as preventing serious problems from occurring in the future. Leaving problems unaddressed can lead to long term problems such as toothache, difficulty eating or smiling and potential tooth loss.
