Do whitening toothpastes work?
Sometimes - but they can be very harmful for your teeth. Traditionally, many ‘whitening’ toothpastes worked by being more abrasive than regular toothpastes, which helped to remove external stains on your teeth. This would not remove the deeper internal stains, as well as potentially leading to ‘toothbrush abrasion’ where some parts of your teeth are permanently scrubbed away! Fortunately these toothpastes are less common today, but we recommend discussing safe and suitable whitening toothpaste options with your dentist.
