Do I need a sleep study before having a CPAP device or MAS appliance?

Yes - both of these devices are medical devices and should only be prescribed to patients who have ideally been assessed with a sleep study to determine the presence and severity of sleep apnoea, as well as ensuring that the appliance provided is appropriate for you. In some cases, poorly fitting or inappropriate appliances may cause significant side effects.

Some private health insurance companies will not provide you with benefits for your appliances if you do not have a letter from your sleep physician recommending use of that appliance.
