Using Your Retainer

Your retainer should be worn nightly to ensure your teeth do not shift following orthodontic treatment. Please contact the practice if your retainer is lost or damaged so we can help prevent unwanted tooth movement.

Before using your retainer, always brush and floss your teeth thoroughly. Any food or plaque caught under the appliance will lead to a greater likelihood of cavities or gum disease.

Always use both hands to place and remove your retainer. Avoid flipping it out with your tongue or pulling on one side only, which can damage it.
When not in use, store your retainer in the provided case in a cool area (such as your bathroom) to avoid damage from heat, falling, or pets.

Cleaning Your Retainer

Proper cleaning of your retainer is important to ensure it remains fresh and lasts as long as possible. Use a brush with dishwashing detergent to clean the inner and outer surfaces of the appliance. Toothpaste should be avoided as it will leave scratches which damage the appliance and leads to accumulation of plaque and mineral deposits which can be hard to remove.

Rinse the appliance with cold or lukewarm water only – hot water can lead to the appliance warping and potentially cause damage to your teeth.
For further cleaning/disinfection of your retainer, we recommend the use of denture/appliance cleaning tablets or Milton’s solution (baby bottle bleach) for 15 minutes. Please ensure you rinse your retainer well before use.

You should bring your retainer to each dental appointment for review and adjustment. If you have any damage to your retainer, experience strong discomfort or have further concerns about your retainer, please contact the practice so we can ensure you are looked after.
