Mandibular Advancement Splint
Mandibular Advancement Splint Information
Before using your oral appliance, ensure you brush and floss your teeth thoroughly. Ensure the appliance is placed in your mouth and positioned firmly in place with finger pressure—do not bite into your appliance to seat it as damage of your teeth or appliance may occur.
Common temporary issues with oral appliance use may include excessive salivation, dry mouth, difficulty with sleep, jaw muscle or joint discomfort. These will generally resolve in the first fortnight of use as you adapt to the appliance.
Appliance Advancement
Your appliance is adjustable to customise the amount of lower jaw advancement necessary to treat your snoring and sleep apnoea. This may require adjustment over the first few weeks of use to find a setting that best works for you.
We recommend you do not advance your appliance for the first 14 days. This will allow sufficient time for your teeth and jaws to become used to your new appliance. During this time, please complete the attached forms to help you monitor your sleep quality.
After 14 days, please advance the appliance by one step as indicated on the manufacturer's instructions. Continue to record your sleep quality on the attached form.
7 days after the first adjustment, advance the appliance one step further and record your sleep quality.
We recommend you continue to advance the appliance at 7 day intervals until either:
- your sleep quality is not improving, or
- it is too uncomfortable to wear the appliance at that setting.
Once this occurs, step the appliance back to the previous comfortable or effective setting and use your appliance nightly.
Please contact us if you require further advancement tabs, or have any issues with advancing your appliance.
Appliance Care
For thorough cleaning of your appliance, use the cleaning brush provided with hand or dish liquid soap to clean the inner and outer surfaces of the appliance each morning. Toothpaste should be avoided as it leaves scratches which may accumulate hard-to-remove plaque and mineral deposits on the appliance.
Rinse the appliance and Morning Aligner with cold water only—hot water can lead to deformation of your appliance and potentially prevent your appliance from fitting.
For further cleaning or disinfection of your appliance, we recommend the use of denture/appliance cleaning tablets every few days. Your appliances can be left to soak in the solution for 10 minutes in a container or ultrasonic cleaner. Please ensure you rinse your appliance before use.
We recommend storage of your appliance in the provided case in a cool area (such as your bathroom) to avoid accidental damage from heat, drops, or pets.
Bite changes may be an unwanted permanent side effect from oral appliance usage but can be reversed if managed early on. Ensure daily use of your Morning Aligner to ensure your bite returns to normal within the first half hour after waking. Position your teeth into the Morning Aligner and gently squeeze your teeth until you feel them seat completely into the Morning Aligner.
Please contact us as soon as possible if you lose or damage your Morning Aligner or notice problems with your bite.
