Take your pain medication within 1–2 hours of the procedure, then every 4–6 hours for the first day and the day after surgery. Ibuprofen (e.g. Nurofen, Brufen), Paracetamol, or paracetamol/codeine combinations (e.g. Panadol, Panadeine) can be taken together for increased effect. Avoid Aspirin as it may promote bleeding. Please read the instructions on the back of the pain medication packaging for the correct dosage and to avoid excessive medication. Take antibiotics if prescribed.

Oozing and blood-stained saliva are normal during the first 24 hours.

If bleeding persists, apply steady pressure to the area with moist gauze for 30 minutes. Avoid spitting or dabbing the surgical site with tissues, as this may encourage further bleeding.

Some swelling and bruising are to be expected following surgery. Do not eat until the numbness has completely worn off. Eat soft foods and chew on the side opposite the surgical area. Avoid disturbing the surgical site, as the tissues are very delicate during the first few days. Consume cold foods and liquids for the next 48 hours.

Do not smoke and avoid alcohol during the healing period.

Rest as much as possible for the next 2–3 days. On the day of surgery, remain seated or lie down with your head elevated. Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours. Contact sports and swimming activities should be avoided for 6 weeks.

Do not brush or floss around the surgical site for the first 2 weeks. You may continue normal brushing and flossing in all other areas of the mouth. Use chlorhexidine mouthwash (Savacol) twice daily before brushing, holding the rinse in your mouth for 1 minute each time, until you are able to brush the area comfortably again, usually after 1–2 weeks. Saltwater rinses may also be used to help remove food particles.

Cold packs can be applied to the outside of the face for the first 1–2 days to help minimise swelling.
