What can damage my teeth?

Although the enamel that covers your teeth is very strong, it does have its limits. Common causes of tooth damage are biting on hard foods, grinding and clenching of teeth, tooth decay and injuries causing trauma to teeth. Hard foods such as lollies, popcorn kernels or ice place great stress on teeth. Ongoing clenching and grinding of teeth can also place excessive forces on teeth, causing cracks and fractures over time. Trauma to your teeth, such as in a sporting incident or falls, can also lead to teeth becoming damaged. Teeth with decay also are more vulnerable to cracks and breaking than healthy teeth.

My front teeth are chipped, what can I do?

Small chips on your front teeth can easily be repaired with a tooth coloured filling material which usually matches very well to your natural tooth. In some circumstances where your tooth is more extensively damaged, a ceramic material may be a better looking and longer lasting alternative.

How do I know if my teeth are cracked?

Cracks in your teeth are usually easily seen at a dental examination, but can sometimes cause pain while biting on harder foods or sensitive to temperature. Sometimes, cracks in your teeth are only evident under existing fillings in your teeth and are discovered during replacement of older fillings.

What can I do if my teeth are cracked?

In most cases, the cracked portion of your tooth can be repaired to protect the damaged area. In more severe cases, the crack may extend into the nerve or root of the tooth and cannot be repaired adequately. In these situations, we can look to replace the tooth with something longer lasting.

How do I prevent cracked teeth?

You can help to stop cracks forming in your teeth by ensuring your teeth remain in good condition and free of decay, as well as preventing heavy forces being placed on your teeth frequently. Avoiding chewing on very hard or sticky foods and try not to bite on hard objects with your teeth. If you are aware of any tooth grinding or clenching habits, it may be a good idea to have a protective orthotic or guard made to prevent your teeth from becoming damaged. Also, if you play any contact sports, it is highly advisable to have a mouthguard professionally fitted to keep your teeth safe!
